Car Hire / Flights & Hotels - Where have all the cheap deals gone?

I was doing an interview for The Siesta Show yesterday and we had quite an interesting chat. I will put the actual show on this page next week when it has been aired.

Anyway, one of the things we talked about was - where have all the deals gone?

CAR HIRE

Car hire is an interesting topic, I would say that Spain is one the biggest countries for tourist car hire in the world (America is obviously so big its number 1!).

It’s not unusual for the car hire companies at the main airports to run out of cars during the peek couple of weeks in August BUT they only normally run out of cars a few days before.

This year has been different......Most of the car hire companies thought this year was going to be a disaster for tourism and cut their car fleets by around 20 - 30%. In fact the cuts were so aggressive and quick that in the week leading unto Easter there was NOT A SINGLE car left for hire at Malaga Airport - (the taxis must have been rubbing their hands).

The knock on effect this will have over the peek summer months is obvious and from the data I have here I can see that the car hire costs are already climbing way higher than last year and my prediction is that many companies will simply be SOLD OUT of cars by the time we get to mid July!

So no deals on car hire at the main Spanish Airports this summer!

What’s happening With Flights?

Another interesting one... A lot of the routes have been reduced, I travel to London a lot and on MOST days the last flight I can get out of Gatwick or London is around 1730 - 1800. For the last few years I used to get flights at around 20:00.

Although companies like Aer Lingus have opened a few new routes on the whole I would say that flights have been slashed.

Another Example is Flybe from Exeter to Malaga. I like Flybe, good airline, good planes and good staff! I am sure that there was a daily flight between Exeter and Malaga last year..This year there are 4 flights per week....not huge changes but subtle and enough to keep the flights that are working full.

On the whole for peek travel months of July and August....I haven't seen any change in the prices of flights.

Hotels & Holiday Apartments

This is the one area where there are definitely deals to be had!

Unlike car hire companies and airlines the hotels can't suddenly cut capacity, they can't loose 100 rooms (although I have heard of Hotels in Dubai closing whole floors).

The same with private rental holiday apartments, people still have them and need to get them let.

We also have a couple of holiday apartments in La Maestranza, Marbella and whilst we are getting enquiries this year EVERYONE is after a deal (and rightly so!).

We have also had a lot more bookings for just a week or so in advance. Normally by the end of March the apartments would be fully booked for June, July and August. This year we are not yet fully booked BUT we are getting enquiries where the visitors want to come over in the next week or so.

Why is this happening?

I think it’s down to the fact that most people are worried about their jobs and income and are waiting to see how things pan out. As some people go through the year and realize that everything is OK with their jobs so they start to think maybe they will have that holiday after all.

The only sad thing is that if you are from the UK the prices look so expensive compared to last year or the year before....

It's sad for 2 reasons.....for those of us who operate in Euros; we have to drop our prices to attract the UK Tourists whose pound is weaker....

And the UK tourists pay less in Euros but are paying more or less the same in pounds as last year or the year before....so no real winners there either!

I think this is what's happened to the Hotels in Spain. The change in the pound has left them looking really expensive BUT the hotel outgoings remain the same....if they slash their prices too hard to appeal to the UK market they might end up not being able to pay the bills.....a difficult and delicate balance!

All in all I think if you are coming over to Spain this year then you should be able to get flights, cars and accommodation at a good price BUT not at the bargain prices many people are expecting.

I think the other subtle change we will see this year is the change in habits of the holiday maker. It is still very cheap to come on holiday and sit by a pool or go to the beach the expensive bit is eating out and the treats.

I know a lot of people are coming out over the summer for their usual 4 week holiday and instead of eating out every night they are eating out perhaps twice per week...it's a compromise but a worthy one!

Hello Jo, I came across your web site by accident, and wondered if you could tell me where there is WiFi capability for my laptop with a printing facility in the area. We have an apartment on La Quinta and are coming out for a two-week holiday shortly, and I'd like to be able to access the Internet and print some things off. Also do you know of any spanish deals for pay as you go mobile broadband as that is of interest to me too.

Thanks, and like the web site. Pauline

Hi Pauline Im not too sure, there is aplace in Cristamar Centre Puerto Banus, but will post your question up and see if anyone comesback to me. Re Broadband, you can buy a pay as you go Dongle / usb for your laptop about 60€uros. Then you add money as you need. If you are out for a long time worth buying the 60euros monthly unlimieted (ask in shop) as 10 or 20 euros can go pretty quickly. Regards Joanne

If you know anything please do leave a comment or email

Driving abroad for first time in 35 Years.

A while back I received an email from a gentleman in the UK who had booked a weeks holiday in Estepona, Spain. Once he booked it he then found out that transfers to and from Estepona were very expensive and may even have to cancel the holiday. I emailed him back with all the different scenarios, and this email proves that its never to late to drive abroad….

Question…

Hi Jo,
I have just booked a weeks holiday in Estepona at the Playabella Spa Hotel and I'm trying to find an economical shuttle bus to get my wife and I from the airport to our hotel on the 13th October and the reverse on the 20th. We are pensioners and the costs I have seen so far seem rather excessive. £110 each way for a 50 minute journey rather takes the edge off the holiday spending money and we may have to cancel the hotel & flight booking.

I do hope you will be able to help us.

Regards
J

Hi J,

Im not too sure if you would drive but the cheapest car is coming out at around 74€uros for the dates that you require. Obviously plus fuel and bit and bobs but thats alot cheaper and you are free to do what you want

www.malaga-airport-guide.com here is the link, you can fill in the form to get a quick quote yourself.

Alternatively this link is to
Shuttle direct who we recommend for a private transfer. To Estepona for 2 of you is coming up at about 48euros per person each way. So just under 100€uros (NOT POUNDS).

You could get a taxi from outside the airport but normally private transfer is about the same price - and you know its a set price unlike taxi who sometimes charge what they want.

You could also take the
Airport Bus from Malaga Airport Bus Time table here takes 45 minutes and costs just 4.26€. You could then get another bus or a taxi from here. Time consuming though.

I hope this helps

Regards

Joanne

Hi Joanne,

Thanks for your reply, most informative and comprehensive !

We will in all probability take the option of Car hire; I haven't driven aboard for 35 years but I'm sure as I've been driving for more years than I care to remember I'll soon get into the swing of things again.

As I used to drive every day in the UK till I retired a couple of years ago, a holiday for me was not to drive but to be chauffeured by car or shuttle when going on holiday. It will be an experience anyway.

Just a quickie, do the car hire companies in Spain have full insurance and accidental damage waiver included in the Hire Fee ?

Regards
J

Hi J

If you go via the link I gave you it gives you an option to take out an extra insurace for 4.73 gbp per day (this does put the price up abit.

I have copied and pasted this for you as an example for a 3 day rental.

"Avoid ALL Excess Charges for just GBP 4.73 a day!
Most car rental companies charge an Excess. if you have a claim - typically you pay the first GBP 1,000 or so. Also, most policies issued by car rental companies don't cover windows, tyres, undercarriage, roof or loss of keys.
Excess Insurance gives you complete peace of mind for just GBP 4.73 per day. The policy will cover up to GBP 2000 of any excess; it can be used on any vehicle type and if we can't confirm your particular vehicle you can use it with any rental company so you won't lose out.
Please note: Excess Insurance is billed separately on your credit card statement.
I wish to purchase excess reimbursement insurance of GBP 4.73 per day = GBP 14.192"

I understand completely about relaxing - but at least if the weather doesnt hold you are able to go out and explore other places. I always think If I can drive abroad anyone can! You just remember you are always in the middle and when driving if the sea is on your left you are going towards Marbella / Estepona and if its on your right then you are going towards malaga.

These are car brokers but generally very cheap - do compare with other prices other Malaga Airport Car Hire
Good luck!

Joanne

Final Email….

Hi Jo

We have returned today from the Playabella Hotel in Costalita del Mar. I took your advice and hired a car from the airport. Finding the Hotel in the first instance was a little daunting but once we'd overcome that problem we had a great time.

In the end we hired a car on line from CarJet.com again everyone was most helpful and pointed us in the right direction to get onto the A7 West heading towards Estepona.

Thanks for your help with our holiday queries, you were most helpful !

Regards
J

English Locksmiths Costa Del Sol

Does anyone know some good English Locksmiths On The Costa Del Sol.

We need to know about English locksmiths in Marbella, Fuengirola, Puerto Banus, Benalmadena, Torremolinos, Estepona...here's why....

One of the really common things that happens when you own a holiday home in Spain is that you can lock yourselves out, or even worse tenants who you are renting your apartment to lock themseleves out!

I see it happening a lot on our urbanisation, the first thing that everyone does is panic and try to break in themseleves, then they go and find the first locksmith they can and usually pay around €120 to get the door opened in under 5 mins! (OK I know Marbella is expensive!).

Our best advice is prevent this from happening by sticking a warning about the keys on the inside of the door.

The other thing is to make contact with a couple of locksmiths and provide your tenants with their numbers and names on an "Emergency" sheet which they should keep with them.

A lot but not all Locksmiths on the Costa Del Sol speak English but it may be worth seeking out actual English Locksmiths as this would make things a lot less stressful for your tenants.

Here are a few below BUT if anyone knows anyone else please do post there details here...

Transfer 13 people from Malaga to Marbella

Hi Jo
Can you please help me??
I am trying to get the best price possible for a transfer for 13 people (+bags) from Malaga Airport to Marbella.
We miss the bus by about 5 mins and the next one is not for around 2 hours, I have got quotes from various companies the cheapest one being €350 return. Is this about right???
Are there any companies which you know do not have insurance etc that I should avoid??
Any help / information would be greatly appreciated!!

ThanksKat

Hi Kathryn,

Shuttle Direct are always the cheapest and most reliable (and legitimate), which is why we recommend them... Click this link If you were to reply on the normal taxis you would need 4 taxis (max 4 per taxi) and this would cost a fortune. Although €350 return sounds a lot it works out at around €15 each, each way which isn't that bad for a 60 km journey and you all get to travel together!

Hope this helps and that you have a great time!

Regards Jo
